Wrapping up 2022

It has been two years since we last updated this blog and a lot has happened in the interim. We continue to build infrastructure here at Bakie. This season we have two vegetable farms, a cut-flower operation, and a sheep dairy. Building out a food-safe milking room with its own septic system in the Hidden Barn was a major project back in the spring. We installed a loading dock to facilitate receiving and shipping agricultural machinery that we import and sell. For fun we refurbished an old chicken coop to house a new flock of Barred Rock hens. And we’ve adopted two new doggies, Teacup and Martha. That, along with supporting the farmers, has kept us busy since early March. Now we’re battening down for the winter—but still farming: the greenhouses are full of winter veggies!—and looking forward to the holidays. Here are a few pictures of works in progress.

The exterior of the Bakie Barn has been restored and painted! Floor partially replaced. Still some structural shoring up to be done.

Much work on the Near Field! Last season we had a bumper crop of potatoes. Now cover cropped with a pasture mix. We’ll hay it for a couple of years.

We’ve just installed a new 30’ x 90’ high tunnel. Had it planted before the end-walls went up!

Finished the second year of our Flower CSA! Selecting seeds for next year now.

This is a Terrateck Cultitrack Tool Carrier, just in from France, fully loaded and about to ship to a farm in the midwest. Getting machines like this one out of a 40’ container and onto a flat bed necessitated installing the loading dock.

Coop DeVille!

Meet Teacup and Martha! New members of the crew.

That’s all for this year. Enjoy the holidays!
